Of all fair trade products to come into popularity in the last twenty years fair trade clothing is the farthest behind. Thousands of retailers gladly sell fair trade foods but it is something of a feat to find clothing that follows the same principles. This is because the largest certifier of fair trade goods in the U.S. – TransfairUS - deals solely in the agricultural aspect of the system. Despite this fact there are clothing lines and stores that focus on the ideals of a hard day’s work for a decent wage, even if it does take some searching to find them.

What is fair trade clothing?

Fair trade is a system put into place to ensure the makers of clothing in countries that are still declaring themselves are treated as fairly as they are elsewhere. Minimum wages are mandatory for fair trade workers and child labor is strictly prohibited. Working conditions are closely evaluated to ensure there is no hazard either to the workers or to the environment. Fair trade clothing is hand made and eco-friendly, leaving as little harm in its wake as possible. Styles that are offered by clothing lines are comparable to those found in high end stores. Pricing can vary from store to store, as with all clothing, but the prices are competitive to non fair trade clothing lines.

The Fair Trade Federation

With the exclusion of certification by TransfairUS fair trade clothing operates as members of the Fair Trade Federation, an organization that holds strict membership limitations. These follow the ideals of fair trade in working conditions, material use and salaries. All of these are independently verified. Information on the Federation can be found at their website at Fairtradefederation.org.
